What I would tell students interested in going to law school is to go for it. And don't be afraid to fail, and just do your best work possible. You only get one try at this and to think that's something that I would have liked to have heard before I started law school.
My name is Jasmyne Shaw, and I'm a 3L. So, I'm currently a member of our National Trial Team. I'm also the President of the Black Law Students Association as well. And I am a Chase Ambassador, so I give tours to prospective students. Once I started classes at Chase, I leaned more into litigation. I knew that that was the field that I eventually wanted to go into. So I tried out for the Trial Team. And I love it. I love the rush that comes from competing against other schools. I love the preparation that goes into it with my fellow teammates and classmates.
One of the aspects that I really enjoy about Chase are the women that work in the Career Services Office. They've helped me throughout my years from when I first started at Chase up until now, as a 3L looking for postgraduate employment. They've helped me work on my resume. They helped me work on my cover letter, interviewing skills, they told me different things about different jobs and what they entailed, and kind of helped me figure out what I wanted to do, outside of what I was learning in the classroom. So that's been very beneficial for me.
I'll say that the study groups that I formed within my first year of law school really helped me throughout law school. Outside of studying and getting ready for exams and writing briefs and things like that, they're just people that they understand what I'm going through because they're going through it as well. And we can lean on each other, we can pull from each other, and we all benefit from being in community with each other.
Which is also why I decided to run for president of the Black Law Students Association. Being a minority at Chase. It's great like you feel welcome here, but it's nice having that community and just someone that looks like you and may have similar upbringings and background and cultural experiences as you... Just knowing that there's somebody there that you can talk to or that you know that they feel the same way about certain things with you.
